Director of Development


Job Description:

The Child Abuse Prevention Center is seeking a Director of Development to plan, coordinate, implement and track all fundraising activities for the agency. These programs include Major Giving, Planned Giving, Grants and Grant Writing/Research, Annual Giving/Annual Campaigns, direct mail, special events, and special projects. This is a hands-on position requiring fundamental and personal work in every area of responsibility.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Work with the Executive Director, to establish and implement development strategies, measures of success, and fundraising goals. Create an annual Development Plan with specific target goals in each area of fundraising and timelines for success.
  • Increase individual, corporate and foundation giving. Design materials, programs or events to support a variety of giving levels.
  • Develop an executive’s philanthropy support group.
  • Actively participate in major and planned gift solicitations. Formulate prospect strategies and participate in direct cultivation, solicitation, stewardship and recognition of donor activity.
  • Produce high-quality and effective, written communication for contributors at all stages of the development process.
  • Key activities will include drafting compelling letters that communicate the agency’s vision, mission, and strategic priorities, developing plans based on prospects' interests and crafting well-conceived proposals and grants for foundation and corporate prospects.
  • Write letters to further communicate the agency’s program goals and mission to increase donor/funder interest in the organization.
  • Produce interim-year and final reports that demonstrate the agency’s impact and respond to specific grant requirements and needs of donors/funders. 
  • Design marketing materials such as periodic overviews and annual reports, and write or contribute to public relations materials such as press releases.
  • Continually build the agency’s knowledge base of current and potential supporters in the regional funding community by identifying and contacting new funders, including pro bono sources. Research, gather and organize web and print-based background information and articles on current and new contacts. Collaborate with the development committee of the Board of Directors.
  • Prepare agendas and materials for and participate in board meetings, funder meetings, special events and presentations, and coordinate follow-up, including ongoing cultivation.
  • Coordinate the production and management of the year-long development calendar, which outlines dates for update reports, proposals, regional newsletters, update letters and follow-up correspondence sent to funders and community contacts as well as dates of cultivation events and meetings.
  • Manage all Development Systems with precision, including hard files, database, and funding plans.
    Represent OCCAPC with other organizations and institutions in addition to the media and public at large.
    Provide a strong, positive and highly professional presence in the community.
  • Other special projects as assigned.

Skills / Knowledge Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
  •  5+ years progressively responsible and well-rounded experience in development (fundraising and grant writing) for a mission driven (non-profit) organization.
  • Experience in design, solicitation and implementation of a comprehensive Development Plan.
  • Demonstrated ability to exceed fundraising goals.
  • Ability to provide strategic planning support and leadership.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Proven ability to interact with individuals of high net worth and the giving public with tact, diplomacy, poise and positive results.
  • Demonstrated management skills working with a Board and staff.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Well versed in Microsoft Office products
