Grant Writer


Job Description:

The Grant Writer is responsible for managing the entire grant application and reporting system for the organization. The position will develop and write letters of inquiry, concept papers, and proposals in support of Child Abuse Prevention Center efforts to secure support for general operations and designated programs. S/he will conduct research on foundation and corporate giving, interests and history to identify new funding opportunities to pursue. S/he will coordinate Child Abuse Prevention Center internal processes of recording keeping and report progress to donors. The successful candidate will possess the ability to research and analyze data in conjunction with seeking out new funding opportunities.

Key Roles (Essential Job Responsibilities):

Annual Fund Development

  • Develop an annual calendar of foundation submission dates and make timely submissions for general operational dollars and restricted funds for programs, capital, and endowment.
  • Maintain reporting calendars for current and new foundation and corporate grants and submit quality reports.
  • Review annual reports from donors as well as new application guidelines and use the information to make appropriate applications.
  • Participate in training sessions, seminars, and/or events provided by donors.
  • Facilitate program requests for support through oversight of the prospect and donor database.
  • Ability to research, analyze and report statistical data in collaboration with the programs the Prevention Center supports.
  • Ability to perform statistical analysis to be able to report back to funders.

New Fund Development

  • Research new funding opportunities for general operational budgets, designated programs, and restricted opportunities and make appropriate applications.
  • Establish and maintain working relationship with directors and staff in an effort to recognize and seek out targeted funding opportunities.

Donor Relations

  • Respond to inquires from donors regarding applications, reports, etc. both through providing information by telephone and by mailing specified information.
  • Participate as needed in functions involving donors.
  • Provide prompt, responsive service to donor/prospect inquires.

Relationships:

  • Internal:  Maintain close contact with Director of Community Development to exchange information, seek and give assistance, consultation and direction.  Maintain close contact with departmental peers to ensure tracking of donations.  Maintain contact with the operations and program staff to find funding needs and to produce succinct applications.  Maintain verbal and written contact with Board members, volunteer committees, and volunteers as needed.
  • External:  Maintain contact with foundation professional peers to achieve fundraising goals and objectives, share information, and resolve problems.

Skills / Knowledge Required:

  • Master’s or Doctorate in related field required.
  • Ten years of progressively responsible experience in grant writing or technical writing.
  • Superior writing, editing, and verbal communications skills; ability to turn data into narrative form.
  • Strong project management, administrative and organizational skills, including documentation, record-keeping, and reporting.
  • Knowledge of budgeting process and outcomes measurement.
  • Ability to work with Acrobat, Fund raising software & MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc).
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and be attentive to details. 
  • Ability to conduction research via the internet, library and other sources.
  • Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with funders, departmental peers, volunteers, and other professionals involved in fundraising.

Physical Requirements/ Work/ Environment:

The successful candidate must be able to work closely with others in an office environment. Use of a variety of office equipment, including: computer telephone, and / or other equipment.  S/he may be required to lift supplies, materials, and collateral materials weighing up to 35 pounds.
