In the year 2010 alone, more than 38,000 child abuse reports were filed in Orange County. It is a grim statistic and becomes doubly so when you consider the fact that approximately one-third of individuals who were abused and neglected when they were children will eventually end up abusing the children they will have later in life. Breaking this generational cycle of abuse and preventing children from being victimized are the goals of the Child Abuse Prevention Programs of the Orange County Child Abuse Prevention Center.
Prevention is by far the best way to reduce the incidences of child abuse and neglect in our community. Although state and federal programs provide tremendous support, we cannot rely on them alone to foster the success of child abuse prevention programs. The prevention of child abuse is an endeavor that requires the dedication and active participation of both individuals and groups in the community.
