ORANGE COUNTY CHILD ABUSE PRVENTION CENTER
HONORED WITH DISNEYLAND® RESORT'S
TOP COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD

  • $50,000 Award Will Be Used To Reduce Waiting List In Prevention Program For Newborns

ORANGE, Calif.( Nov. 10, 2004) – The Orange County Child Abuse Prevention Center received an exciting surprise visit from the Disneyland® Resort on Oct. 23, 2004, and was presented with a $50,000 grant and the organization’s “Outstanding Award”– its top Community Service award for 2004. It was all part of the Resort’s “A Dream is a Wish” whirlwind tour throughout Orange County to distribute $440,000 in Community Service Awards to 30 organizations.

The amount of the grant the Orange County Child Abuse Prevention Center received remained a secret until the traveling caravan arrived for the presentation. Judging committee member and Orange County philanthropist Susan Samueli helped make the presentation, flanked by Minnie and Mickey Mouse dressed in classic attire in honor of Disneyland® Park's upcoming 50 th anniversary.

The $50,000 award will support the Prevention Center’s efforts to eliminate waiting lists in all child abuse and teen pregnancy prevention programs by increasing the organization’s service capabilities.

“ You can’t imagine what this means to the families we serve,” said Kathy McCarrell , Executive Director of the Orange County Child Abuse Prevention Center. “By eliminating waiting lists in our programs, they can get the help they desperately need now, when they need it… not in three months, when it may be too late.”

Since 1957, when Walt Disney established the Community Service Awards, over $8.6 million has been presented to thousands of area organizations that make a difference in the county through selfless works.

Now celebrating its 20th year in operation, the Orange County Child Abuse Prevention Center is committed to breaking the generational cycle of child abuse, domestic violence and teen pregnancy in Orange County. The Prevention Center’s early intervention programs have a well-documented record of strengthening and improving parent-child relationships, working to stop abuse before it occurs. Since 1984, the Prevention Center has served more than 136,000 Orange County residents – including 13,000 children and 5,500 families in the last year alone.
