BRIDGES FOR NEWBORNS

Bridges for Newborns offers parents of newborns a temporary support system to help ease the adjustment following the birth of a new baby. Facilitating the transition from hospital to home is a primary focus, as is giving families the tools they need to ensure their child receives a healthy start in life. Funded by the Children and Families Commission (Proposition 10), this innovative program supports parents for up to one year, helping them acquire the additional skills needed to properly care for their baby.  The Center's professional casework specialists provide personalized, in-home assistance with:

  • Basic Infant Care
    Bathing, feeding and sleeping
  • Child Development
Infant stages, baby temperament, trust-building/bonding and consoling your baby
  • Child Safety
Baby-proofing the home, immunization facts and current SIDS information
  • Access to Resources
Child care referrals, subsidized housing and medical care

Whenever needed, the Center's Multi-Disciplinary Care Team (MDCT) is called upon to provide more comprehensive services, including a home-visiting nurse.

WELCOME BABY

Welcome Baby serves first-time parents of newborn babies, teaching them to care for their infants while guiding them through the stressful and challenging experiences of parenthood. Professional casework specialists or trained volunteers go into the home on a weekly basis for three to six months, emphasizing healthy bonding with the infant in an attempt to minimize the risk of abuse. Parents are educated about:

  • Basic Infant Care
  • Infant Behavior
  • Child Development
  • Home Safety
  • Shaken Baby Syndrome

In addition, parents are linked with available resources in their community. Whenever needed, the Center's Multi-Disciplinary Care Team (MDCT) is called upon to provide more comprehensive services, including a home-visiting nurse. A high percentage of families receiving services are teenage or single mothers with no extended family to teach them to care for their new baby.

TENDER CARE

Tender Care serves Orange County families that have children over six months of age that are struggling with poor parenting, domestic violence and poverty. A professional casework specialist or trained volunteer goes into the home on a weekly basis for three to six months to teach:

  • Budgeting
  • Child Safety
  • Communication Skills
  • Problem-Solving Techniques
The Center also may assist the family in obtaining housing, education and job training in an effort to increase financial self-sufficiency and self-esteem. The trusting relationship that develops between the Center representative and the family is often the only positive support these families receive. Whenever needed, the Center's Multi-Disciplinary Care Team (MDCT) is called upon to provide more comprehensive services, including a home-visiting nurse.
